852 Hz is the last of the six original solfeggio tones, matched to the syllable LA. It is a high, spacious tone between the notes A♭5 and A5. Tradition links it with returning to spiritual order and intuition; wellness sites also call it a 'third eye' frequency. No study has tested 852 Hz on its own, and the third-eye idea has no basis in neuroscience. Some meditators like it for short open-awareness sessions.

How it sounds
852 Hz is a high tone, near the top of the treble staff. As a pure tone it sounds light, bright and airy. Compared with 741 Hz it feels less pointed and more spacious, which is why it is often used for open, wide-focus meditation rather than for alertness.
Like 285 and 639 Hz, it falls almost a quarter-tone away from the nearest standard notes, so it does not match ordinary tuning.
Hearing it properly
Low volume is essential. Hearing is very sensitive in this range compared with the low end of the scale. A level that feels gentle for 174 Hz can feel sharp at 852 Hz.
Listen alone, not over music. Because it sits between standard notes, it clashes with music tuned to A = 440 Hz.
Short sessions work best. High, steady tones become fatiguing; a few minutes is usually enough.
Where the number comes from
852 Hz is one of the six numbers Joseph Puleo derived from verse numbers in the Book of Numbers, as told by Leonard Horowitz and Puleo in 1999 (see the solfeggio overview).
It became LA, the sixth syllable of Ut queant laxis, from the line Labii reatum, "the guilt of the lips", which ends the plea to cleanse the singers' stained lips. In the 1999 account LA means "returning to spiritual order". As with the other syllables, the meaning is an interpretation laid over the hymn, not something the music or the sound itself carries.
Its digits add up to 15, which reduces to 6, and it sits 111 Hz above 741 and 111 Hz below 963.
What the evidence says
A search of Europe PMC in October 2026 found no controlled study of 852 Hz on its own.
The "third eye" label usually refers to the pineal gland or to a point between the eyebrows in meditation traditions. There is no evidence that a tone at 852 Hz, or any audible tone, activates either. The pineal gland responds to light signals relayed from the eyes, not to sound.
Meditation itself has a research base, and a steady sound can give attention something simple to rest on. That benefit belongs to the practice, not to the particular frequency.
