741 Hz Solfeggio Frequency: Meaning, Sound and Evidence
741 Hz is the fifth of the six original solfeggio tones, matched to the syllable SOL, and is almost exactly the note F♯5. Tradition links it with awakening intuition and self-expression; wellness sites add 'detox' and 'cleansing'. No study has tested 741 Hz on its own, and the detox claims confuse sound with electromagnetic radiation. It is a bright, alerting tone better suited to short daytime sessions than to rest.
741 Hz at a glance
- Nearest note
- F♯5 (740.0 Hz). 741 Hz is only about 2 cents sharp, so it is effectively F♯5.
- Wavelength in air
- About 0.46 m
- Place in the scale
- Fifth of the six original tones, 102 Hz above 639 Hz and 111 Hz below 852 Hz
- Solfège syllable
- SOL, from the line Solve polluti ("loosen the guilt of the stained") of the hymn Ut queant laxis

How it sounds
741 Hz is a high, bright tone, an octave and a half above middle C. As a pure tone it has a pointed, alert quality: easy to hear across a room, and harder to ignore than the lower tones of the scale.
Unlike 639 or 852 Hz, it lines up almost perfectly with a standard note, F♯5, so it does not sound out of tune next to an instrument tuned to A = 440 Hz.
Hearing it properly
Turn it down. The ear is considerably more sensitive at 741 Hz than at the bottom of the scale, so the same volume setting sounds louder. A steady, bright tone at high level becomes tiring quickly.
Any speaker will do. Phones and laptops reproduce 741 Hz without difficulty.
Keep sessions short. Most people find a few minutes of a bright pure tone pleasant and half an hour wearing.
Where the number comes from
741 Hz is one of the six numbers Joseph Puleo derived from verse numbers in the Book of Numbers, as told by Leonard Horowitz and Puleo in 1999 (see the solfeggio overview).
It was matched to SOL, from the line Solve polluti of the hymn Ut queant laxis, part of the plea to "loosen the guilt of stained lips". In the 1999 account its meaning is "awakening intuition". The later idea that 741 Hz cleanses or detoxifies seems to echo the Latin words for loosening what is polluted. Either way, the meaning comes from the words of a hymn, not from any property of the sound.
Its digits add up to 12, which reduces to 3. It is the one place in the original six where the gap between neighbouring tones is not 111 Hz: 741 is 102 Hz above 639.
What the evidence says
A search of Europe PMC in October 2026 found no controlled study of 741 Hz on its own.
Claims that 741 Hz detoxifies the body or clears "electromagnetic radiation" mix up two different things. 741 Hz in a solfeggio track is sound, a pressure wave in the air that your ear converts into nerve signals. Electromagnetic radiation, such as radio waves or light, is a different phenomenon, and a sound cannot absorb or neutralise it. There is also no evidence that hearing a tone removes toxins from the body.
What a bright tone can plausibly do is help you feel more alert for a few minutes, as any bright, attention-catching sound can. That is a general effect of pitch, not something specific to 741 Hz.
How to use it
These are practical suggestions based on how the tone sounds, not tested protocols.
- Use it in the daytime, when you want to feel more awake rather than calmer, for example at the start of a work block.
- Play 741 Hz at a low-to-moderate level.
- Keep it short: three to ten minutes, then switch to silence or your usual work sound.
- If you work through a sequence of tones, place 741 Hz after the lower ones rather than starting with it.
Best for, and when to avoid it
- Short daytime sessions when you want to feel sharper
- The end of an ascending sequence of tones, as a cue to start working
- People who find the lower tones too sleepy
- Sleep and evening wind-down
- Anxiety or agitation, where a brighter, more alerting tone may feel unsettling
- Long sessions or high volume, which become fatiguing
- Any expectation of detox or cleansing effects

Questions about 741 Hz
What note is 741 Hz?
It is almost exactly F♯5, which is 740.0 Hz in standard tuning. The difference is about 2 cents, too small to hear.
Does 741 Hz detox the body?
No. There is no evidence that hearing a tone removes toxins, and no study has tested 741 Hz for this. Claims about clearing electromagnetic radiation confuse sound with radiation.
Is 741 Hz good for focus?
It has not been tested for focus. A bright tone may feel alerting for a few minutes. For focus with some research behind it, see binaural beats for focus, and read the evidence there carefully too.
Why is 741 Hz called SOL?
In the 1999 solfeggio scheme, the six original tones were matched to the syllables of the hymn Ut queant laxis. 741 Hz is SOL, from the line Solve polluti.
